Ethiopian Eritrean Gabi
Gabi is a handmade cloth worn by Eritreans and Ethiopians. It is worn over the shoulders and upper body and is made of cotton. Unlike the two layered kuta (worn by men) and Netela (worn by women), it consists of four layers. Both men and women can wear it. Most of the time, the eldery wear it.

I discovered gabis 20 years ago while working with UNMEE, the UN peacekeeping mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea. A friend bought one to use as a blanket. I did too and found mine light and warm. I came back with 3 gabis, which I’ve used ever since.
